Special Guest: Dan Klyn
We’re very excited to announce that Michigan’s own Dan Klyn will be joining us as our guest speaker for this event! Dan is an information architecture practitioner and e-commerce consultant and teaches the IA course at the University of Michigan School of Information. Dan’s ongoing research focus is to understand the work of IA-pioneer Richard Saul Wurman and his professional practice has spanned the course of twelve years in a variety of agency, “innie” and “outtie” contexts with such clients as AAA, American Girl, The Ark, Brookstone, Costa Del Mar, Hollanders, NOOMA, Rose Brand, Seagate, ShopAtHomeTV, SIGGRAPH, Simply Sausage, Time-Life and TJ Maxx.
Dan’s topic will be “The Nature of Information Architecture.” Most people who’re designing or responsible for the delivery of internet user experience are familiar with “information architecture” as a turn of phrase, or as a job title or project phase. But what is the nature of information architecture? For those who call themselves information architects and perhaps more importantly for those who don’t, what is the essence of IA? How does this essence correspond with and differ from the essences of adjacent acronyms like SEO and UXD and IxD? In this talk, Dan will explain the nature of information architecture as he has come to understand it, informed by many years of teaching IA in the context of graduate school library and information science programs, and by an equal number of years practicing IA in agencies, software shops, nonprofit organizations and for-profit retailers. This talk is not about theory. This talk is about what IA is, what it does (and doesn’t do), and how one can know when it’s good.
Dan has recently been nominated to join the Information Architecture Institute Board of Directors and will be presenting at the IDEA Conference 2010 in Philadelphia on Oct 1.
