We are excited to introduce you to Grant Carmichael, the first of our panelists for next week’s UX Roles in the Workplace. To help you get to know Grant a little bit better, we asked him to answer a few questions for us.
* Where do you work?
My company is ThinkXD. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and I work both out of my home office or within teams primarily in West Michigan. I also work at building community with volunteer efforts such as Midwest UX 2013, TEDxGrandRapids, SiTE:LAB, Design Week, IxDAGrandRapids and other organizations that amplify and enrich local design, art and ideas.
* What is your job title?
Ah, yes…job title. I am a Designer. My emphasis is on User Research, Strategy and Interaction. I most commonly communicate my title as a UX Designer, although this is increasingly becoming a challenged label. My degree is in Industrial Design, a foundation that I continue to find relevant and value to this day.
* What makes you passionate about your work?
Finding the unmet needs, elements that make something a pleasure to use and taming complexity. Plus I get to sketch a bunch.
* If you could give one piece of advice to someone in college right now, what would it be?
Don’t feel like you are not ready. Your homework is to work on the things that are outside of your comfort zone. Are you shy? Get out there and meet people. Scared to speak in public? Look for opportunities to give a talk. It is all about people and building relationships – this is how you learn to collaborate.
* Is there anything else you would like to share about this topic (UX Roles in the Workplace), yourself, or life in general?
As a Designer, you need to uncover the “why”. The business goals are part of the why, but they should be informed by the end user’s needs and opportunities of the materials and environment.
This event is free to attend including food. Registering allows us to make sure our space is big enough and we have enough food and beverages for everyone.
